Sangre de Cristo Seminary facilities – By popular request

I’ve received several requests to post pictures of the seminary cabins and other facilities, so here is a small group of pictures with explanations that should help identify each.  Remember, we are up in the mountains at 9,000 feet!  These cabins were designed to take the punishment of the climate and the environment.  They are rustic, but very cozy.  After Paula and I moved here, we realized we could live the rest of our lives here if the Lord willed.
Chapelinthesnow On the left is the Sangre de Cristo Seminary Chapel.  It is a great place to worship.  We have people from the area who join us each Sunday.  On Wednesdays during the semesters, we have noon worship services where the students and visiting professors preach.Having been to more than one seminary, I think I can safely say that Sangre de Cristo Seminary provides more opportunities for its students to preach and teach than any other.  We’ll see if any seminary comes forward and challenges that!

You’ll notice quite a bit of snow in some of these pictures.  We have actually been very low on our snowfall this year.
The picture to the right is the Clark Library named after Dr. Gordon H. Clark.  Dr. Clark was the father of Lois Clark Zeller, who is married to the Seminary’s founder and president emeritus, Dr. Dwight Zeller.Dr. Clark has a wikipedia page in which you may find interesting facts about him.

The library is very well equipped with thousands of books that are helpful for student research.
Lois Zeller is our Librarian par excellence!

It has a large living area with an adjoining kitchen, and a large separate bedroom and bath.  This cabin is a short walk to the Chapel and the Lodge.
Just down the hill from the Clark Library is the bachelors cabin.  The cabin on the top floor is a two room cabin in which our visiting professors live.  It is also used by visiting families when it is available. The bachelors cabin has bunk beds and adjoining restrooms with showers.  I’m not sure what the rent is for the cabins but they are very affordable.

This is another of our married family cabins.  This cabin will accommodate a family with several children comfortably and is located very close to the classroom and lodge.

Note the shelves in the kitchen.  Shelves are great to have!
The picture to the right is of our Seminary Lodge.  The dining hall (in the middle) faces the Clark Library and has an excellent view of Horn Peak.  Our main classroom is to the right.  The offices and book store are to the left of the dining hall.  The bachelors kitchen is behind the dining hall.  We have great fellowship meals and activities at the lodge.  Occasionally, we will have a family movie night in the class room. FamilyCabin2 This is another family cabin called the upper and lower “A” frame.
Paula and I lived in the top when we first came and later moved downstairs where we are now.  Top and bottom both have a large living area with an adjoining kitchen, and a large bedroom with adjoining bathroom and shower.  The top cabin has two loft areas for either a children’s sleeping area or storage. The picture below is our living area and the photographer is backed up to the kitchen.

Bottom left:  Deer frequent the area just outside our window.

familycabinfront The cabin on the left is a married family cabin.  It is located just down the drive from our cabin and has several rooms and a large back deck.  The living room is large and has a washer-dryer connection. This cabin affords a little more seclusion but is not too far away from the action.
To the right is the living/dining area of the cabin above.  It has very nice woodwork.  The sleeping areas of this cabin are small, but it is a very cozy cabin for a small family.  The living room shown in the picture below is very comfortable.

That’s really all I have at this time.  We actually have a very nice large family cabin about a mile down the mountain which I believe is a three bedroom double-wide with some awesome views of Humbolt Peak and beautiful vistas.  It is not uncommon to have a herd of Elk cross by the property.  There is also an adjoining small family cabin that would be good for just a husband and wife.  I’ll try to get pictures of these cabins soon.

I can’t express to you how much Paula and I love being here at the Seminary.  We have been blessed beyond our wildest imagination, and the environment is an excellent place for the study of God’s word.
As a side note, there are limited income earning opportunities in the area, but jobs can be found.

  2. So, what church do you recommend in this area of Colorado?

    • Even though I am a Baptist, I enjoy attending the Chapel services on Sunday. We have about eleven or so churches in Westcliffe of different denominations. I occassionaly attend the pastor’s luncheons and know several of the pastors. For such a small community to have so many churches and people who attend is a wonderful thing.
